Thermal Imaging Camera

The RCC's thermal imaging camera is available for loan to communities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
It can be borrowed for up to two weeks from Autumn to Spring each year, and could be of particular use for community groups, parish councils and community building committees.
It can be used to capture infra-red thermal images of buildings as part of projects to raise awareness about energy saving and to identify where insulation improvements are needed.
Ideas for projects
A thermal imaging project can be an excellent way to generate community interest in energy saving. Images taken with a thermal imaging camera are very visually engaging and can form an effective part of a campaign to promote energy saving in households. Through analysis of the pictures taken, thermal images can also be used to identify:
- Homes needing loft or cavity wall insulation
- Gaps in existing insulation
- Spots in need of draught-proofing
The three most common types of community thermal imaging projects are:
- A survey of every building in a community
- A survey available to householders that volunteer to take part
- An assessment of particular buildings (e.g. a village hall, school, etc)
We invite each potential user of the camera to identify a project plan that best suits their goals, available resources and community needs. Case studies of similar projects will be made available on request to support project planning.
If a professional assessment of a community building is required, contact the Village Halls Officer at the RCC to discuss our conducting an energy audit on your behalf.
For an example of a community thermal imaging project see the Appleby Magna thermal imaging case study.
Arranging a loan of the camera
If you are interested in borrowing the camera, contact the Communities Cutting Carbon project to discuss your interest, or complete and submit an Expression Of Interest form below. We will check that your proposed project meets our requirements and that the camera is available for use at a time that suits your needs.
We are looking to loan the camera out to projects that are well-planned, inclusive and which will lead to positive results (such as householders installing insulation, or increased understanding of energy efficiency).
Initial training will be provided to users and support will be available to ensure that projects are managed successfully.
