Ashwell

Ashwell is a small village, with 265 residents in the Parish, and its identity is largely influenced by proximity to Oakham. The Parish Plan was completed in 2005 following consultation with the community. 70% of adults and 60% of young people responded to the questionnaires.

Key concerns identified in the Plan included:

  • Planning control, to avoid ribbon development and destruction of green belt;
  • Encouraging opportunities for local employment;
  • Provision of play and recreation areas and other facilities for the young;
  • Speeding traffic, including heavy vehicles;
  • Provision of pavements and walkways;
  • Interest in social and village activities;
  • Introduction of Village Newsletter;
  • Upgrading of the Village Hall;
  • Potential for other uses of the Vilage Church;
  • Interest in more mobile service provision;
  • Interest in kerbside recycling;
  • Access for the disabled.

Barrowden

Barrowden and Wakerley are linked by the bridge over the River Welland and have been part of the Burley Estate since 1551. The two villages were further linked by shared school facilities and the coming of the railway in 1875. Although the line was closed in 1966, the villages continue to share close associatin though the Village Church, the WI, the Village Hall and the monthly parish magazine.

The Parish Plan was completed in 2005 following a consultation in which 245 people took part.

Cottesmore

Following the completion and launch of Cottesmore Parish Plan in September 2007, a flurry of community activity led to the formation of a number of new groups and societies including; ‘Cottesmore Ramblers’, a Wine Circle, a Gardening Club, a Book Club, an Investment Club, Computer Workshops, a Local History and Archeology Group, 'Friends of Cottesmore Church' and a Neighbourhood Watch Committee, all of which continue to flourish.

All the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm of the community in Cottesmore has been rewarded recently with the village being chosen to represent Rutland in last years prestigious ‘Calor Village of the Year for England’ competition.

Tony McClelland, Chair of the Plan Group said, “I am delighted to have been involved in this project and I hope that it plays an integral role in the future development of our community.”
