Croxton Kerrial Youth Club

The RCC has been working with a group of dedicated parents and volunteers in the Melton village of Croxton Kerrial to start up a new Youth Club for 7 to 16 year olds which is split into 2 groups – 7 to 11 year olds and 12 to 16 year olds. The Youth Club runs a group a week on a Friday night with the two different age groups meeting on alternate weeks and so far has 27 members for the younger age group and 10 for the older age group.

The club was conceived by local resident Hannah Paterson who contacted the RCC in May of this year for help and advice on how best to go about getting started. With support from the RCC and the Stronger Communities worker at Voluntary Action Leicestershire Hannah has put together a committee and constitution along with a comprehensive portfolio of policies and procedures and also gained access to 8 free CRB checks through Young People First.

Fundraising has been well under way since May of this year when the Committee organised a family rounders day which was attended by 43 people and raised £118. The group has also successfully applied for Rotary Club funding and received £250 towards the cost of new equipment in July.

The 8 person committee is committed to providing a Youth Club that meets the needs and ideas of the young people in Croxton Kerrial and the surrounding villages. In order to ensure this happens in the future The RCC worked with the Committee to put together a consultation on the Youth Club’s Launch Night on September 10th. The consultation consisted of 2 ideas walls, a voting tube consultation and a Big Brother Style video diary room and asked the young people present what activities they wanted to see at their Youth Club, what they want in their tuck shop and what their previous experiences of Youth Clubs had been. The RCC has compiled the results for the Youth Club along with information on appropriate funding sources in order to sustain their services.

After 2 weeks of operation the Youth Club has 37 signed up members and thirty of these have already attended a youth club session meaning they have already met their target number of members to sustain their costs (excluding new equipment) for the first year!
