It is anticipated that people who volunteer for this project will have an understanding of rural issues and the problems facing rural communities which can lead to stress and ill-health. Volunteers will be home-based and it is essential that they have access to a vehicle if they are placed in the position of befriender. There may be opportunities for other voluntary positions within the project as it develops, such as fundraising or manning an information stall at an event.
Volunteers should meet specific criteria – remaining non-judgemental and maintaining confidentiality being two of the utmost importance, as well as possessing a sympathetic manner without disclosing their own cares. By listening to a distressed person in such a way, emotional support will be given, and by signposting to the most appropriate agency, practical support will be given.
People wishing to volunteer will be required to fill out an application form, and those selected will be invited to an information event, where an introductory presentation will take place. Those people who feel that they would like to go on to become a volunteer will then be invited back for an informal discussion with the project staff after which confirmation of selection will be given.
All volunteers will receive appropriate training in all or some of the following areas (depending upon experience/skills):
mental health issues
- stress and its effects
- listening skills
- policies and procedures
- health and safety procedures
- suicide awareness
- equal opportunities
- domestic violence awareness
- alcohol and substance misuse awareness
Volunteers will be paid travel and other out-of-pocket expenses (such as parking). The current mileage rate offered is 40p per mile. If a volunteer has to use their own telephone in connection with the project expenses will be paid (subject to keeping the necessary telephone call log). The current rate offered is 4p per minute.
