St Matthews Community Solutions Centre

One of the new community garden areas in St Matthews
This project is aiming to convert as many the green areas around the St Matthews Estate in Leicester to productively grow food.
The Clean and Green scheme is aimed to get the residents of St Matthews to think differently about the environment and the green spaces that they share. It is responding to the needs of local residents to have access to affordable, healthy food, and to improve the look and feel of the local area by turning unused litter-filled areas into productive green spaces.
Activities
In summer 2011, local residents were trained in vegetable growing skills, and two vegetable gardens have been established. In 2011/12, the project is looking to establish two micro-orchards on the St Matthews estate.
For 2012, plans are underway for trained community volunteers to grow veg in local residents' unused garden space.
