Shelthorpe Community Garden

The Shelthorpe Community Garden, including a mural by Charnwood Arts.
The Shelthorpe Community Garden is a project run by the Shelthorpe Community Association in Loughborough.
It is the only garden on the Shelthorpe Estate to have been restored into a functioning community garden. The theme of the garden is the “Circle of Life”, and it will be used for growing vegetables by local residents and community groups, for public events and for learning about environmental issues.
The project has been supported by Communities Cutting Carbon and Charnwood Borough Council.
Activities
- The Community Garden regularly involves local residents, school children, university students and other community organisations in work days and growing vegetables on the site.
- An open day was held on Wednesday 24th August 2011, to thank the many funders and supporters who have helped with the project over the previous year. See below for photos.
- The project was awarded a Climate Friendly Communities grant to fund the purchase of tools, training on environmentally friendly growing and the construction of a composting urinal.
- In June 2011, two training sessions took place on organic growing techniques led by local experts Sam Woods and Alec Duthie.
